Apple is launching a new, five-year research project, seeking to better understand how their technology can play a role in improving the physical, mental, and overall well-being of their users. Additionally, the study aims to explore the correlation between various fields of health and how they can impact one another, an example being: the impact of mental health on heart rate.
“We’re thrilled to bring forward the Apple Health Study, which will only accelerate our understanding of health and technology across the human body, both physically and mentally,” said Dr. Sumbul Desai, Apple’s vice president of health.
The new insights gained from this study will likely lead to the development of new products, those that can surface areas of health that have been long overlooked such as menstrual and hearing health. This longitudinal study is being conducted in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School.
This longitudinal study is currently open for individuals who live in the United States, meet the minimum age requirements, and complete the informed consent process. Participants can enroll through the Apple Research app on their devices.
The Apple Research app is also a newly launched innovation of the company. This app changes how medical research is conducted by bringing together health organizations, medical institutions and companies, and average, everyday people, to study health and generate results.
Even for those with this app installed, participation is completely voluntary and participants can choose what data to share, as well as opt out of the study whenever they like.
“We’ve only just begun to scratch the surface of how technology can improve our understanding of human health,” said Calum MacRae, a professor at Harvard Medical school and a principal investigator of the study.
