Louisiana made history this week after it used nitrogen gas as a type of execution in the state, which is a contentious move for changing the death penalty protocols. They used the new execution method on Jessie Hoffman Jr, a 46-year-old man. This resulted in his death due to nitrogen hypoxia, a condition that denies the body oxygen by making the prisoner inhale pure nitrogen.

State authorities described the procedure as more humane and less risky than lethal injection, which has faced growing criticism over drug shortages and failed attempts. However human rights activists criticized the use of nitrogen gas as experimental and warned that it would also cause suffering and subsequent pain.

The application has reopened a national debate on capital punishment, with legal experts expecting court challenges for the new procedure. Louisiana's initiative might influence other states to consider alternative modes of execution.

Supporters say that nitrogen gas offers a swift and painless death, potentially reducing the likelihood of prolonged agony. Opponents, however, warn that without strict guidelines and supervision, the process can lead to botched or inhumane killings, further fueling the controversy surrounding the death penalty in America.
