The Amazon rainforest plays a pivotal role in regulating our climate, as it also protects many species. However, many disregard this fact, with many governments authorizing deforestation. There is an urgent need for better protective measures that can preserve our wildlife and trees.
One example is the construction of a new four-lane highway, Avenida Liberdade. Its goal is to help give access to the large number of cars that will be in the area for the upcoming COP30 climate summit in Belém, Brazil, in November 2025. Tens of thousands of acres of the Amazon were cleared, leading to chances of environmental damage.
The Amazon Rainforest has jaguars, dolphins, sloths, macaws, toucans, eagles, monkeys, green anacondas, black caimans, electric eels, piranhas, poison dart frogs, giant leaf frogs, bullet ants, Goliath birdeater spiders, and over 400 billion trees and millions of species.
This new construction already adds on to a history of removing acres of the important forest. In 2022, the rainforest experienced a 21% increase in deforestation compared to the previous year, which is one of the highest deforestation rates in recent history.
Protecting the Amazon rainforest should be a priority for everyone, not just Brazil. The forest absorbs many carbon emissions, making it crucial in humanity’s war with climate change. It also helps to preserve the wildlife that we, humans, have destroyed. We must help to support the Amazon rainforest and its protective groups to ensure the health of our planet.
