The Thunder’s pristine 24-1 tag, tying the single-season record through 25 games, has dented slightly after the Spurs narrowly etched a win in the NBA Cup semifinals.

Oklahoma City took an early 11-point lead through the first quarter in the semi-final matchup between two of the brightest young teams. To start the game, the Spurs missed 12 three-pointers and could only muster 20 points to the Thunder’s 31.

Victor Wembanyama’s entrance in the second quarter sparked a 13-0 run to bring the Spurs back into the contest. Despite trailing by as much as 16 early in the second, the game was within a single possession, 49-46 in favor of OKC, at halftime.

Through the third and fourth quarters, neither team had control of the game, and as the Spurs took their first lead of the game, 10 more lead changes were to come.

Both teams nailed clutch shots in the final quarter, but the Spurs were ahead two with just 1.5 seconds remaining, Jalen Williams having one shot remaining from the line. Alex Caruso caught the intentionally missed free throw but was unable to finish the putback in a controversial no-call.

Devin Vassell finished with 23 points, along with 22 from each of Stephon Castle, De’Aaron Fox, and Victor Wembanyama in their win. The top scorer for the Thunder was the 2025 MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, accompanied by four more players in double-digits. Wembanyama ended with a +21 plus/minus in 21 minutes.

The Spurs advance to face the New York Knicks in the 2025 NBA Cup and have notably curbed the Thunder’s aspiration of holding the best record in league history.
