Alexandra Eala Makes History as First Filipina to go to Miami Open Semifinals

Nineteen-year-old Philippine Alexandra Eala has taken the world by storm with her stellar performance at the 2025 Miami Open. She had qualified for the event as a wildcard, and she was able to make a string of historic wins. In the second round, she defeated Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets and registered her first win over a top 30 player. She then beat Madison Keys, ranked world number 5. It was a great game since she was the first Filipino to defeat a top 10 player. Upset world No. 2 and five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Świątek 6–2, 7–5, having broken Świątek's service eight times.



When Eala reached the semifinal, she made history as the first Filipina to advance this far in a WTA Tour tournament, climbing into the WTA's top 100 rankings. Her historic run ended with a tight defeat to world No. 4 Jessica Pegula, 7–6(3), 5–7, 6–3.


She attended the Rafa Nadal Academy, which demonstrated her hard work and commitment to the sport. Her dedication is shown in her remarkable Eala achievement at such a young age. Her impact is a milestone for Philippine tennis, as it encourages promising players and raises the country's profile in the sport.
