Just seconds into the Austrian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli found themselves out of the race.
Antonelli explained that his locked rear tires prevented his car from turning at high speeds. He apologized to both his team and Verstappen, whom he collided with just three turns into the race.
Verstappen, perhaps surprisingly calm about the situation, forgave the rookie, saying that “Everyone has made a mistake like that in their careers. Kimi is a very big talent. He wants to win, you know, and that's all fine. No one does these things on purpose.”
The four-time champion started the race 43 points behind the championship leader, Oscar Piastri, but lost an additional 18 points after his DNF (Did Not Finish) in Austria. As for rookie Antonelli, who was on the podium not long before the Austrian Grand Prix, a learning curve lies ahead for the young driver with great potential.
With Silverstone approaching, both talented drivers will need to hit the reset button to get back into the points.
