Coco Gauff has obtained her first French Open title after beating Aryna Sabalenka, who is currently ranked number one in the world in women’s singles tennis. This is a momentous achievement for American tennis fans as Coco became the first American to win the French Open women’s title since Serena Williams in 2015.
In the first set, Aryna Sabalenka managed to lead with a score of 7-6. Though the rhythm of the game quickly changed in the second set as Coco won 6-2. Gauff won the third set 6-4 when Sabalenka hit the ball out. The windy conditions made it difficult for both players and further increased the tension of the match.
In one memorable moment, Gauff hit a lob that Sabalenka chased down before attempting a shot between her legs. Gauff quickly intercepted it at the net, making her win the point. She was consistent from the baseline compared to Sabalenka, who committed around 70 unforced errors (mistakes made by the player when they should have been able to make a shot, but fail due to poor execution or judgment rather than being forced by a difficult shot from their opponent).
In Coco Gauff’s on-court speech, she said how her defeat in 2022 at the age of 18 put her in a “dark place” and then thanked the fans who were rooting for her to succeed. “The crowd really helped me today, you guys were cheering for me so hard and I don’t know what I did to deserve so much love from the French crowd,” she said. Sabalenka was in tears after her defeat, but praised Gauff for being a “fighter” and said she deserved the win. Though she added that the windy conditions made her make more unforced errors than normal.
