The M23 Rebel group was able to get control of two major cities in eastern Congo. This happened over a few months, which led to the death of 7,000 citizens and over 1.2 million people being displaced. The conflict was rooted in ethnic tension, political instability, and competition over natural resources. This caused the DRC into a humanitarian catastrophe, where there is widespread destruction, mass displacement, and fear of famine and disease.

In the past, they briefly got control of Goma, where the Congolese forces supported by United Nations peacekeepers were able to push them back. However, in the current months, they are better equipped, overwhelming the government forces.

International reactions were swift, but limited. They condemned the violence, and nations around called for peace, but diplomatic efforts had failed. Organizations can not provide aid to the millions of displaced people, leaving many to live in overcrowded camps with little food, clean water, or medical care. Many people say there was a chaotic season, where families tried to escape the fighting. Roads can not be used due to the conflict, making evacuation much harder.

The capture of the major cities shows a shift in the region's conflict. These cities were economic and logistical hubs, and their fall demonstrates the weakness in the authority of the Congo government and threatens the stability of Central Africa. The situation continues to get worse, and without immediate intervention, eastern Congo could get deeper into the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
