On Sunday, May 25, 2025, the University of North Carolina made history by winning the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. They beat Northwestern 12–8, finishing an undefeated season with a perfect 22–0 record. This was UNC’s fourth national title, joining victories in 2013, 2016, and 2022 (NCAA.com).
The star of the game was redshirt freshman Chloe Humphrey, who had an incredible performance with four goals and an assist, breaking UNC’s record for most shots in a season with 90, surpassing Jamie Ortega’s previous record of 81 from the 2021 season. Chloe’s sister, graduate attacker Ashley Humphrey, also played a big role, adding four assists, showing just how dangerous they can be together (USA Lacrosse Magazine). But it wasn’t only about the offense — UNC’s defense was just as important, especially in shutting down Northwestern’s top scorer, Madison Taylor, who was held to zero goals for only the third time in her career (USA Lacrosse). In the final quarter, Eliza Osburn scored two quick goals within nine seconds, boosting UNC’s lead to five points.
Northwestern fought hard to stay in it. Their goalkeeper, Delaney Sweitzer, made a stunning 17 saves, setting a new school record for most saves in a championship game (Northwestern Athletics).
A crowd of 14,423 fans packed the stands — the largest ever for an NCAA women’s lacrosse final, according to The ACC.
After the game, UNC’s head coach Jenny Levy told reporters, “Our team has been tough all year. Nothing has fazed them.” The championship reflected UNC’s mix of talented young players with strong draw control and solid defense, which proved too much for Northwestern’s Wildcats to handle.
