The England Cricket Board made a shocking move before England’s tour of Ireland in September. With many all-format stars rested, England’s leadership has decided to give 21-year-old Jacob Bethell the reins in the three-match T20I series in Dublin.

Bethell, who has had a bright start to his international career, averages 38.7, 35.2, and 40.1 in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, respectively.

Though he has yet to score his maiden century in international cricket, he has shown glimpses of potential in his mostly fiery and attacking innings.

On the back of a successful year, where he has featured in 29 international matches and two IPL matches, as well, Bethell’s leadership has not been tested at the professional level.

England’s roll of the dice in a low-stakes series serves as a litmus test for the young talent, and they will be keenly hoping for some positives.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Bethell stated, “It was obviously great news to hear. The first feeling was pride. It's not really sunk in yet. It's only been a few hours. I am looking forward to it, and it'll be a huge honor to lead the team against Ireland.”

Also in the Ireland squad, as well as the upcoming South Africa T20I series, is fast bowler Sonny Baker, who continues to impress with his pace and swing in The Hundred, most recently securing a hat-trick against the Northern Superchargers.
