Kash Patel was confirmed on Feb. 20 by the Senate, being the new Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Patel was nominated by president Donald Trump earlier this year, with his confirmation suggesting a new change in government.
Patel’s appointment faced strong opposition from both Democrats and Republicans. For them, Patel lacked any law enforcement experience, making him unqualified for the position. Patel, who used to work for the Secretary of Defense, has always hated the way the FBI handles things. Specifically, referring to the one regarding Russia and the 2020 U.S. elections. His confirmation hearing had many conflicting exchanges, with many senators on both sides questioning why he is interested in leading the FBI.
People that support Patel argue that his leadership may restore trust in the FBI, with the FBI having faced many allegations of political bias recently. In his confirmation hearing, Patel promised to uphold the Constitution and ensure that the FBI remains free and separate from politics.
Many predict a heavy focus on internal structure and reform in the bureau’s investigations. However, critics worry that Patel’s close ties to Trump could make him misuse the FBI to please Trump, raising concerns over the agency’s authority and independence.
As Patel settles into his new role, many will wait to see how he performs handling the FBI. Whether he will be able to reform the agency or address national security concerns, his confirmation signals a reformed FBI under the Trump administration.
