Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced and implemented a curfew for a portion of downtown Los Angeles on June 10, 2025.

After nearly two weeks of unrest related to the protests against immigration raids, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass lifted the downtown curfew on June 17, 2025.

The curfew was imposed on Tuesday, June 10, as a measure to prevent vandalism and protect local businesses. According to Bass, the curfew provided “successful crime prevention and suppression efforts,” reducing nighttime crime and reassuring residents and owners.

Protests began around June 6 when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted aggressive raids across the city, detaining hundreds of people. Clashes between agents and activists intensified tensions, including the deployment of tear gas and stun grenades.

In response, the Trump administration federalized the California National Guard, deploying around 4,100 troops and 700 Marines. This move angered both Mayor Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom. On June 8, Governor Newsom formally requested that the Trump administration rescind its "unlawful deployment" of National Guard troops.

Bass set the curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and imposed it in a 1-square-mile area of downtown where the protests and violence occurred, affecting fewer than 100,000 residents.

Despite the lifted curfew, calls are growing for long-term solutions. Activists and local leaders alike are urging policy reforms toward more compassionate immigration practices.
