In the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open, Moyuka Uchijima defeated world No. 3 Jessica Pegula in straight sets, 6–3, 6–2. The win was Uchijima's career breakthrough, marking her first win over a top-10 player.
Although her ranking was only No. 56 at the time, the 23-year-old Japanese player produced outstanding maturity and quality on Madrid's clay surfaces. Before this match, Uchijima had a record of 0–6 against top-10 players and had never defeated a top-25 player. By defeating Pegula, she not only broke this streak but also reached the fourth round of the WTA 1000 for the first time.
Pegula, who was on a title form to start the campaign with title triumphs in Austin and Charleston, could not withstand Uchijima's strong baseline attack and considerate ball striking. The match lasted over one hour and twenty minutes, indicating how dominant Uchijima was during the match.
Uchijima's victory in her first time out in Madrid is her coming-out party as a serious challenger in the WTA Tour. As she goes on to continue this momentum, the fans and pundits will be eagerly waiting to see how far she can push herself in the tournament and in future events.
