Three weeks after the two blockbuster trades of the NBA trade deadline, who’s winning?
Los Angeles Lakers: Luka Doncic’s arrival in Los Angeles has been nothing short of massively documented. Every step he has taken in his tenure so far has been scrutinized, and as the rust wears off, we’re left to see what this Lakers roster can be in the postseason. In LeBron James’ twenty-second season, this move seems a way to ensure the future of the Lakers will remain intact after the inevitable retirement of James in future seasons.
Dallas Mavericks: After the astonishing trade that sent Doncic packing, Anthony Davis’s anticipated debut ended catastrophically. He remains sidelined by a lingering left adductor strain. In the absence of their franchise centerpiece, Doncic, the Mavericks have shown flashes of strong competitiveness, led by Kyrie Irving and role players, furthered by strong showings from recent addition Max Christie.
Warriors: Jimmy Butler’s impact in his first few games as a Warrior has been staggering. The pressure taken off Stephen Curry has helped the franchise return to its winning ways, with Butler contributing to a 7-1 record in the last eight games. Butler’s ability to get to the line and attack the rim has helped silence concerns about Golden State’s interior struggles. Time will tell if this promising duo has something special left in store.
Heat: After letting go of Butler’s antics for former No.1 pick Andrew Wiggins, as well as smaller pieces, the Heat have looked mediocre at best. Some brighter signs of note come in the form of Tyler Herro and sporadic scoring nights from younger roster spots. It is intriguing to see what is to come of the young Heat as they fight to stay competitive.
